Bites alone cannot identify bed bugs
Skin marks can have many causes, and some people do not react to bed bug bites. Physical evidence is more useful: live bugs, shed skins, tiny pale eggs, dark spotting or reddish stains near sleeping areas. Carpet beetles can be mistaken for bed bugs.
Photograph what you find and its location. An unclear photo or a stain by itself does not confirm an infestation; ask a qualified professional to examine the evidence.
Check resting places and nearby hiding spots
Mattress seams, bed-frame joints, headboards and upholstered furniture are places where bed bugs can hide. They can also occupy small cracks nearby. A quick check of the mattress surface alone cannot rule them out.
- Record the date and exact room where each sign appeared.
- Tell the provider about recent travel, second-hand furniture and any work already attempted.
- In a shared building, ask the manager how inspection and communication will be coordinated.
Plan movement and preparation with the provider
Before moving furniture or belongings between rooms, ask how they should be handled. Obtain the provider's preparation instructions for its proposed method; preparation for one treatment is not necessarily suitable for another.
Keep the general appointment checklist and the specialist preparation instructions together. Confirm what applies to bedding, clothing, belongings and access before the appointment.
Ask how the findings will be checked
Compare a written inspection finding and treatment scope, including which rooms are covered and how follow-up is assessed. A promise of one visit is not a substitute for explaining the evidence and the next checks.
Request a named contact for new sightings after the appointment and clarify whether further inspections or visits are included.
Three questions to take to a company
- What confirms that the evidence is bed bugs rather than a lookalike?
- Which rooms and furniture are included, and what preparation do you require?
- How will we decide whether another inspection or treatment is needed?
